Lep Article In Fresno Bee

Our local rag, the Fresno Bee, had a cool article in this morning's paper about the rapidly approaching Lep/BA show on Saturday. Take a read:

Def Leppard

They're still around, they still rock, and they're coming to Fresno.

By Mike Osegueda / The Fresno Bee
(Updated Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 6:57 AM)

So, you might be wondering what the heck Def Leppard is doing touring the country with Bryan Adams, playing minor league baseball stadiums.

It's a legitimate question.

Here you have a hard rock group from England, one of the biggest acts of the '80s as a matter of fact, touring with Mr. "Everything I Do, I Do It For You," pop-rock singer/songwriter Bryan Adams.

It's like putting ice cream on pizza.

To boot, they're going around the country, playing at minor league baseball stadiums, a takeoff of last year's Bob Dylan-Willie Nelson tour package that did the same thing — and the Def Leppard guys don't even like baseball.

"I could never quite get into it," guitarist Phil Collen says. "Coming from England, it's soccer and stuff like that."

So, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, baseball stadium. It doesn't add up.

Unless you think of it as a chance to hear Def Leppard play "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Animal" along with Adams singing "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" and "Cuts Like A Knife" outdoors on a warm summer Saturday night.

Then it makes sense — it's a total '80s and early '90s flashback. And it's the first concert at Grizzlies Stadium since September 2003's Huey Lewis and the News and Doobie Brothers double-dip.

This tour kicks off on Wednesday in Portland and then stops in San Jose on Friday before hitting Fresno on Saturday.

Collen was pleased with how ticket sales for the tour have already been shaping up. So the unlikely combo of Adams and Def Leppard must be resonating with music fans.

"It seems to be making a draw from what people are saying about ticket sales," says Collen, 47, from his home in Orange County.

"There are similarities. Obviously we're a bit harder- edge than Bryan Adams," he says. "But it's cool."

While the music isn't similar, the two acts are, by no means, strangers to each other.

When Def Leppard was recording its 1992 album "Adrenalize," its producer Mutt Lange also was working with Adams, and the two acts would cross paths.

"We actually played together," Collen says, as if he's just remembered.

It was a show at Madison Square Garden. A benefit for putting up metal detectors in the arena. The lineup was Def Leppard, Adams and Richard Marx.

"If that's anything to go by," Collen says. "It should be really good."

When he was interviewed in April, Collen had few details about what would make up the group's stage show. They were still working to make it "explosive."

"We actually don't even know what it's gonna be like yet," he says. "I think we're gonna try something different. It's great adding all the bangs and whistles and explosions and all that, but at the end of the day, it's all about if you rock or not."

At this point, it's pretty much certified that Def Leppard rocks.

Go to a bar with a jukebox, and you'll most likely hear one of the old Def Leppard hits. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" still gets used in commercials. The group hasn't expired yet.

"One of my all-time favorites," says Carter, a radio personality and the program director at KJFX, FM 95.7, Fresno's classic-rock station. "A lot of people think that they came out of the '80s metal scene when actually they were around before that. They have stood the test of time because the music is great. They're fantastic live. You know the songs. You sing along. You feel good. And that's what music is all about."

She's right about the band standing the test of time. Not only for the fact that they can still pull off a headlining tour, but Def Leppard is also not one of those '80s groups that has broken up a bunch of times and now tours with a few original members and a couple loose parts.

"It's really rare," Collen says. "There's been a unity because we've all experienced the same things together. Births, deaths, marriages — all that stuff. It kinda keeps you tight. That's the why you do it. I think that's one of the reasons we've maintained so long."

Aside from a lineup change early in the band's history that brought Collen into the fold, the only other change to Def Leppard came when guitar player Steve Clark died from an overdose and later was replaced with Viv Campbell.

"It's not just a five minutes thing - the band that is around for six months, and it disappears," Collen says.

Twenty-two years after the band's breakthrough album, "Pyromania," Def Leppard is still releasing new material.

After this tour wraps up, they're going to put the finishing touches on a cover album that puts a Def Leppard spin on many of the British acts from the '70s that influenced the band, people such as David Bowie and T. Rex.

Also, "Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection" was released two weeks ago, a two- CD greatest-hits package with one CD of the hits and another of band and fan favorites.

Don't underestimate the impact of those hits. The band's last tour ended in November in Russia.
Then they vacationed in India, where they've never performed but are recognized nonetheless.
And of course, people around the world know the words to "Pour Some Sugar On Me."
"They do," Collen says. "They sing it in English. The same deal with Japan. It's kinda cool. It's really cute."

The same deal with young people, too. People younger than Collen come up and say they love Def Leppard.

"The younger fans got to hear it from their bigger brothers or from their parents, which is a bit scary," Collen says.

"They say, 'Oh yeah, my mum listened to you' and it's like 'Oh god.' That makes you feel old."

Lake

We got out of the house this morning, and took a short drive to Table Mountain Casino for a little gambling....I didn't win squat. I had one nickel Monopoly machine up to about 700 credits, but it sucked them all back, and not even a burp to say thank you. But it was great to get Mom out of the house for once....she seemed to enjoy herself.

And now that evening is approaching, our 'lovely' next door neighbor has his friggin' BBQ going. Just friggin' wonderful.

I took my camera along for the short drive, and snapped this pic of the nearby lake...this is Millerton Lake, and it's already getting crowded at 10:45 in the morning. The lake is fronted by Friant Dam, and a couple of weeks ago water had to be released from the lake due to our record snowpack in the mountains:

Viv And Sav On The Radio!

Thanks to Kathy calling me on my cell (BIG THANK YOU, Kathy!!!), I caught Vivian Campbell and Rick Savage from Def Leppard on our local classic rock station today doing a brief interview about the upcoming tour!

It was a static-y interview, because my radio SUCKS, but they both sounded very upbeat about the tour, said they would be playing their cover of Badfinger's "No Matter What" (which appears on their just released double CD Rock Of Ages - The Definitive Collection. Kathy and I got our copies today at lunch! Anyway...they said their much speculated covers CD will be out around Sept. 20th (directly from Viv's mouth...not a rumor!), and that they were looking forward to getting back out on the road this summer.

Now I'm more pumped than ever!!!! WOOHOO!!! 16 MORE DAYS!!!!

When Did "Honey Mustard" Sound Like "Jalapenos?"

I went to SONIC for lunch today *evil snicker*, and I ordered a chicken strip wrap, but requested no tomato, and no ranch dressing. I asked if they could substitute the ranch with some of their honey mustard sauce. The girl on the speakerbox repeated 'honey mustard' back to me when she read my order back.

I went back to work, took my lunch to my desk, and opened up my wrap to put some ketchup on it, and what do I find?? JALAPENOS instead of HONEY MUSTARD! I don't want jalapenos! Since when did HONEY MUSTARD sound like JALAPENOS, anyway?? Needless to say, I picked those off. And my trash can smelled like jalapenos all afternoon.

How some people live to see their 20's is a mystery to me.

NO Electricity!

Last night sucked big time....our power went out at 5 pm, and stayed out until 8:45. I don't know why, but our whole block was out. Maybe a transformer or something blew out. It's a damn good thing it wasn't really hot yesterday....otherwise this house would have been an oven.

I sure hope we don't have rolling blackouts to look forward to this summer!

And I saw Mr. Hottie's UPS truck yesterday....I was out back talking to one of the Material Services guys I've known for years, and a UPS truck pulled up, and backed up to the loading area, but I never saw him get out of the truck. So rather than just standing there, looking OBVIOUS, I left. I haven't seen him since last Wednesday, because we had emergency staff meetings on Thursday and Friday mornings....I told our Service Area Leader yesterday that those meetings cut into my UPS time! She laughed and said I was a crack-up.

The hydrangias sure gained more color in just two days:

I Want My Ticket!

I'm starting to get rather antsy and nervous....I haven't received my ticket to the Lep show in the mail yet. Had it been through Ticketbastard instead of Music Today, I would have already had my ticket....I already have my Crue ticket, and that's not until OCTOBER!

I sure hope I receive it sometime this week....I want it in my hot little hand! Kathy, have you received yours yet?

I was surprised to see that gas prices have fallen again....it was down to $2.55/gallon this morning! I think I paid $2.65 on Sunday. Sad isn't it? I'm getting excited over $2.55 gas. Man, whatever happened to the days of a $.33 loaf of bread, and penny candy?? When a dollar could buy enough candy to give us kids a diabetic fit?! The good old days...........when a dollar would buy you a cheeseburger, fries AND a coke at McDonalds, AND give you change back!

My "Rock Of Ages" CD is in the mail, and hopefully that will arrive in the next couple of days! But I WANT MY TICKET!!!! ONLY 18 MORE DAYS!!!!!

What In The Hell Are You BBQ'ing???!!

Our 'lovely' next door neighbor is starting his summer ritual already....firing up the old barbecue, and grilling SOMETHING....I have no clue what he throws on there, but it smells like crap! We joke amongst our selves that we'd better go out and count the dogs to make sure they are all still there....it smells that bad.

And it doesn't help matters much in the fact that he parks the BBQ right by the privacy fence dividing us, and parks it right where the fumes will come right through the swamp cooler, and flood into the house.

We actually had smoke in our house this evening from his damned BBQ, because we turned the swamp cooler on to cool the house off, since it was pushing 90 degrees at about 5 pm, and all of the smoke came right through the cooler. I was getting nauseated from the smell.

I sure hope whatever the hell it was he cremated, that he enjoyed it.

And damn...."ER" just isn't going to be the same without Carter (Noah Wylie). I'm gonna miss him.

Move, Dumbass!!

Can someone explain to me WHY a driver would ignore another drivers' gesture of allowing them to pull out of a parking lot? I witnessed this very thing on Tuesday afternoon. I had just left work, and needed to turn right at the corner coming up. This is a rather tricky, and dangerous corner to manuever to (Kathy ~ I'm talking about being on Blackstone going north, approaching Barstow, where I needed to turn right). This particular corner is tricky because other drivers suddenly realize they need to turn, and will pull out of the main stream of traffic into the right turn lane, so I approach this corner VERY cautiously.

There is a small strip mall shopping center located on this corner, with merchants like Trader Joes, and a Fresh Foods market as occupants. It's a rather busy parking lot with cars going in, and coming out of the lot. The main entrance to the lot is located maybe 100 feet from where I need to turn. The car in front of me wanted to pull into the lot, and there was a large SUV wanting to pull out onto Blackstone. The driver in front of me kept motioning for the SUV to go ahead and pull out. The SUV driver motioned for the courteous driver to go ahead, I guess thinking that the courteous one wasn't wanting to pull INTO the parking lot.

Even I started motioning the woman in the SUV to pull out! But she just sat there, motioning us to go ahead! What she probably wanted to do was wait for a clearance in traffic to go across all three lanes to get into the westbound turnlane. And, the nose of her SUV was sticking partially out into the road, so it made it rather treacherous to squeeze through to continue on to my turn. The courteous driver finally just pulled into the parking lot, just barely missing the SUV.

I wanted to yell at the woman, MOVE YOU DUMBASS!! We're not sitting here just fanning ourselves for the amusement! Some people are just too stupid to be given a license.

You Can Jump Me.....

Yes, I said those words to Mr. Hottie this morning while he was unloading his truck. The Materiel Services guy was out there helping him, but that didn't matter! How it came about:

I opened my drop box, and found a couple of transport bags coming from Region inside the box. I opened one of them, and Mr. Hottie said, "Hey Kim, is there any money inside?" I told him no, otherwise I'd be going to the casino if there was money (joking, of course!). Then he said, "If there was money inside, could we jump you and take the money?" I said, "You could jump me anyway....that might be fun!" LOL!!! I told him that it's my job to start trouble, because I'm a redhead. He told the other guy, "Gotta watch those redheads....they're wild." I said, "Oh you have NO idea."

He turned beet red! Job accomplished for today.....*snicker*

The Rolling Stones?

Evidently, The Rolling Stones are going to make a tour stop here sometime this year. I'm not a Stones fan by any stretch of the imagination, but it might be interesting to go, just to say "I saw them." I just never liked their music...maybe a couple of songs here and there, but other than that....nope.

Since the Save Mart Center opened a couple of years ago on the Fresno State campus, we're FINALLY getting some great concerts coming to town...concerts that usually bypass us for LA, Sacramento or San Francisco. The news blurb last night said that The Stones have not been here since 1968! So finally we have some big name entertainment coming here, instead of having to travel to LA or SF to see the bigger shows. Now if we can just get Def Leppard booked into the Save Mart Center one of these days......

Angry Clouds

Yep....the clouds looked rather angry when I left for lunch today:

Sorry for the grainy quality...I always seem to leave my new camera at home on days when I really need it! So the cell phone has to do the job!

About 10 minutes after I came back to the office from lunch, the clouds opened up and battered us with heavy rain for about 10 minutes. I really need to go on a storm chase one of these days!

And DAMN my ass and legs are sore today! Get your minds out of the gutter...it's NOT because of THAT! I haven't exercised in awhile, and I did a "The Firm" workout yesterday, and my ass/legs are freakin' sore! I *wish* I could say it was because of something naughty, but alas....

Rainy Monday

I hope all the mothers out there had a wonderful Mothers Day! It was a quiet one around here. My brother and his wife came over for about an hour in the morning, then in the afternoon I ran over to Applebee's to pick up some dinner...gotta love that curbside service! It's just too damned crowded in the restaurants on days like Mothers Day and Fathers Day. I wanted to take mom up to the casino, but she wasn't feeling up to it, so......

But I did have a most wonderful chat with one of my Lep buds, Tracey during the afternoon yesterday, while we were playing a game of World Class Solitare on Pogo. It's funny, when I first ventured into the Lep online world, I was actually afraid to say anything to any of the people who had been there for awhile, and Tracey was one of them...I guess it was fear of that whole 'acceptance' thing we all experience in new situations. But I can say with confidence now that Tracey is one of my best online buds, and it was a joy to have a chat online with her! Love ya, girl!

And we're down to 3 weeks and 5 days until Lep!!! I can't frickin' wait!

Have a good Monday....it's another rainy day here....but it's warm out. Supposed to be 85 by the end of the week. I would love it if it would just stay right there, but 100+ degree temps are just around the corner. Bleh.

And if anyone needs to know of a good...um...laxative, I highly recommend a Starbucks Caramel Frappucino....holy runs, Batman!

AND, I found out what Mr. Hottie's name is...Brian. I just love the name Brian! I just went out back, and there was a different driver this morning. So I asked the Materiel Services guy who told me about the note last week, what Mr. Hottie's name is. I asked him if he said anything when he put the note on my box, and he said Brian said not to tell me, like he was doing it on the sly. LOL! Next mission...to find out how old he is.

Damn Canker Sore!

I just hate getting a canker sore right in the front of the mouth....I've had one for a couple of days now, on the inside of my upper lip, and everything I eat stings the hell out of it!

It's been rather muggy here the past couple of days....today we're getting rain, but it's warm. It's supposedly going to rain some more on the weekend. I want to try to get mom out of the house for Mother's day to go up to the casino for a couple of hours. It'll probably be a madhouse up there, too. I'd love to hit just one good jackpot!

I could have had $50,000 once....we had just arrived in Reno on one of our quarterly trips there, and I was playing this one bank of nickel poker machines at our hotel, Circus Circus....the top prize for a royal flush with max bet was 1 million nickels. I was only putting in 2 or three nickels, just to test the machine to see how the cards were coming up. About 5 minutes into it, I see all hearts....I think, "Cool, a flush." Upon further inspection, I saw that a had a friggin' ROYAL FLUSH. Right about then would have been a good time to go out and play on Virginia Street in the traffic. So instead of $50,000 I ended up with a lousy $45.00.

You'd think I'd learn a lesson from that little escapade, right? BWAHAHAA...think again! Another time in Reno, we walked down to the Eldorado casino, and I gave a try to quarter video poker. The progressive for a royal flush with max bet (keywords: MAX BET - remember that) was around $1500. I happened to look at the empty machine next to me, and I saw that whoever had been playing that machine had cashed out, but the machine must have run out of money because there was still 90 credits on the meter. I looked around, and waited a couple of minutes in case that person came back, and when no one came back, I turned on my light on my machine. When the attendant came over, I told them it didn't finish paying me *snicker*. They filled it up with more quarters and VOILA...I had almost $25 in free money! Now, you'd think that I'd use the logic that this wasn't my money, so why not play MAX BET to see what happens? Oh noooooooooo....I stayed with my 2-3 quarter bets....and yep...I got another royal flush....another $1500 I could have had, but because I was so chintzy with my bets.......... HEY, LOOK AT THAT BALL OUT IN THE STREET! *sigh*

New Blog, And Birds

For those of you who wondered were our lovely Aussie lady Danni ran off to....she's still around, and carrying 'precious cargo'....follow her journey through her pregnancy on her new blog, Mummy To Be! CONGRATULATIONS, DANNI!!!!

I noticed this pair of birds sitting on the next door neighbor's fence at about 6:30 last night...I haven't a clue as to what type of bird they are, maybe mourning doves? We have alot of those around here...anyway...they were just having a grand time doing their evening grooming, so I grabbed my camera and zoomed in:

Uh-oh....I've been noticed..the bird crouching flew up onto the roof just seconds after this pic:

Now that one sees me too!

And here they are up on the neighbor's roof...which he is in DIRE need of a new roof, btw:
